MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Democratic candidate Ginger Murray joined Marshfield Broadcasting's Get to Know program to discuss her background, qualifications, and priorities as she seeks to represent Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
During the interview, Murray shared her roots in northern Wisconsin, growing up in Forest County and attending a small rural school before earning degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and later becoming an attorney. She said her legal career has included serving as a city attorney, family court commissioner, guardian ad litem, and owner of a family law practice focused on children and families.
Murray said she decided to run for Congress after waiting until her children were adults, explaining that she and her husband agreed she would not pursue elected office while raising a family. She said concerns about affordability, environmental sustainability, and reproductive freedom also influenced her decision to enter the race.
When asked about her priorities for the district, Murray identified health care and affordability as the two issues she hears about most often while campaigning across the district. She also emphasized what she described as the importance of protecting democratic institutions and constitutional government.
On economic issues, Murray pointed to inflation, tariffs, and tax policy as areas where she believes Congress can take action. She also discussed support for rural hospitals and clinics, advocating for expanding access to health care and exploring options such as a public health insurance option or broader universal coverage.
Agriculture was another major topic during the interview. Murray said farmers have expressed concerns about labor availability, rising costs, and succession planning for family farms. She proposed expanding access to low-interest financing for young farmers and creating additional support programs similar to those available for higher education.
Discussing infrastructure, Murray highlighted continued investment in broadband expansion, road improvements, and environmental protection. She said maintaining funding for broadband projects and enforcing existing clean water and clean air laws are important priorities for rural communities.
Education and workforce development also featured prominently. Murray expressed support for increasing financial assistance for students attending technical colleges, apprenticeship programs, and trade schools, while encouraging more professionals to work in rural Wisconsin through incentive programs.
When asked about public safety, Murray said she supports local law enforcement while emphasizing the importance of constitutional protections and accountability. She also addressed immigration enforcement, discussing concerns she has about civil liberties and due process.
On energy policy, Murray said she favors expanding renewable energy sources, including solar, hydroelectric power, and biomass, while reducing long-term dependence on fossil fuels. She also suggested encouraging renewable energy production alongside future economic development projects.
Murray concluded the interview by pledging to remain accessible through in-person meetings, virtual town halls, and technology that would allow constituents to provide input on upcoming congressional votes. Asked what she hopes voters remember about her campaign, Murray said she wants people to say she understood their needs and worked to deliver results.
