Marshfield, WI — From major summer events to national TV exposure and innovative mental health programs, Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker shared a wide range of updates during a recent episode of County Connections on Marshfield Now!

Sheriff Becker joined host David Ballerstein to talk about several key happenings impacting Wood County residents this summer and beyond.
Aqua Ski Show Set to Make a SplashOne of the major summer attractions highlighted was the upcoming Aqua Ski Show, part of the State Water Ski Tournament running July 17–20. The event, which has a rich history spanning over five decades, will feature impressive performances, including swivel skiing, jumping, and barefoot skiing. The local Aqua Skiers team, in Division 2, is scheduled to perform on Friday afternoon.

Becker, who has personal ties to the Aqua Skiers, expressed enthusiasm about the show, noting the significant tourism and community interest it generates. He also emphasized ongoing safety efforts, including a newly built, tornado-rated shelter for emergencies.

Dunk the Chief for a Cause community engagement continues with the “Dunk the Chief” event hosted by the Marshfield Police Department on July 26. The Wood County Sheriff’s Department will participate, displaying their Special Response Team vehicle and raising funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield.

“I’ll be set up to be dunked around noon,” said Becker with a smile. “I promise I’ll go down a couple of times for an awesome cause.”

Spotlight on National Television in a significant development, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department is set to be featured on the national TV show Cops. The program will focus on corrections operations at the county’s new jail facility, which opened just over three months ago.

Producers plan to film for several months, covering various aspects of jail operations as well as patrol duties. Becker, who has been a fan of the show since the early 1990s, said the opportunity would help showcase both the facility and the professionalism of the department’s staff.

“It’s a great chance to highlight the good work our team does and show the public what law enforcement entails,” Becker said.

Sheriff’s Department Expands Mental Health Efforts Becker also discussed a significant grant awarded to the Sheriff’s Department to hire a dedicated social worker. The initiative, part of the department’s ongoing mental health efforts, aims to enhance proactive outreach and follow-up for individuals experiencing mental health crises.
The new position, expected to start in September, will work alongside Deputy Alicia Brundage, who currently focuses on mental health issues within the community. Becker praised the collaboration that secured the grant, emphasizing its potential to make a meaningful difference.

“It’s all about connecting people with resources, being proactive, and keeping individuals out of crisis situations whenever possible,” Becker said.

Honoring longtime service the program also highlighted the upcoming retirement of Sarah McCormick after nearly 30 years with the Sheriff’s Department. Starting her career as a corrections officer, McCormick transitioned to patrol work shortly after 9/11 and became deeply involved in investigations, particularly juvenile cases. In recent years, she worked in courthouse security and led the county’s Project Lifesaver program.

“She’s done so much for this department,” Becker said. “She’s going to be missed.”

Community Presence at Central Wisconsin State Fair looking ahead, the Sheriff’s Department is preparing for the Central Wisconsin State Fair, where they’ll partner with the Marshfield Police Department to maintain a presence at the fairgrounds. Visitors will have a chance to interact with officers, learn about equipment, and explore law enforcement careers.

“It’s a great opportunity for the public to meet us, see what we do, and ask questions,” said Becker.
Reflecting on Sacrifices in Law EnforcementIn a more somber moment, Sheriff Becker acknowledged the recent funeral of Officer Kendall Quarter of the Milwaukee Police Department, the fourth Milwaukee officer killed in the line of duty in five years. He shared reflections on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the importance of community support.

“It’s a reminder that our profession is dangerous, but also that people truly do support us,” Becker said.
As the summer unfolds, the Sheriff’s Department remains focused on community engagement, public safety, and innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of Wood County residents.
