Marshfield, WI — With the growing concern over impaired driving, the Tavern League of Wood County has rolled out a groundbreaking initiative to ensure the safety of local residents. The Safe Ride Home program, a collaboration between the Tavern League and Uber, aims to keep drivers off the road after they've had too much to drink, providing free transportation for those in need.

Joshua, the president of the Wood County Tavern League, sat down with David Ballerstein on Marshfield Now! to discuss the program's impact. He emphasized how the program has evolved over the years, transitioning from taxicabs to Uber rides, with more flexibility and convenience for patrons in need of a safe way home.

"The Safe Ride Program started around 1999," Joshua explained. "Back then, it was simple taxicabs. Today, we work with Uber to give patrons the option to go anywhere in Wood County and even beyond, ensuring they get home safely, without the worry of driving under the influence."

The program is designed to help prevent drunk driving incidents, with over 45,000 rides provided annually across different counties. While exact numbers of lives saved are impossible to determine, Joshua notes that the program has led to a significant decline in OWIs and fatal crashes.

The initiative is funded through donations from local businesses, fundraising events, and federal grants. "When we knock on doors for donations, all the funds stay local, helping to provide these rides to those who need them," said Joshua.

To further improve the program's reach, the Tavern League has made it easier for drivers to participate. A simple scan of a QR code or a quick visit to the Tavern League's website allows individuals to apply to become Uber drivers for the Safe Ride Program. With a shortage of drivers, the League encourages more people to join and help get patrons home safely.

One of the key features of this program is that it operates seven days a week, unlike traditional taxi services, which are limited to weekends. Whether it’s a Monday evening or a Friday night, the Safe Ride program ensures that no one has to worry about driving home after a drink.

"It's not just about getting people home; it's about creating jobs and ensuring the safety of our community," Joshua said. "And with support from the city and the mayor, this initiative continues to grow and protect our residents."

To find out more about the Safe Ride Home program or to donate, visit the Tavern League’s website or scan the QR code featured on their posters in local businesses.

Through this initiative, the Tavern League of Wood County is leading the charge in reducing impaired driving and promoting responsible fun in the community.
