MARSHFIELD – First Presbyterian Church (FPC), in partnership with the Green Teams of Faith Lutheran and Good Shepherd, is taking action to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and microplastics in everyday life . The effort follows a 2024 Presbyterian Church USA overture entitled “Becoming Free from Plastics Pollution,” introduced by Presbyterians for Earth Care (PEC), of which FPC is an active member. The overture, enthusiastically approved at the denomination’s General Assembly, calls on congregations to reduce their use of plastics and advocate for stronger policies addressing plastic pollution. As part of this initiative, FPC will host a free public screening of the documentary Plastic People on Thursday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. About the Film Plastic People is a ground-breaking documentary that investigates humanity’s dependence on plastic and the growing threat of microplastics to human health. Nearly every piece of plastic ever made breaks down into microscopic particles that now drift in the air, infiltrate soil, and contaminate water supplies. Leading scientists have discovered these microplastics in human organs, blood, brain tissue, and even in the placentas of newborns. The film, led by science journalist Ziya Tong and director Ben Addelman, explores the personal and global consequences of this invisible pollution while issuing a powerful call to rethink our reliance on plastics. Organizers encourage community members to mark their calendars, invite family and friends, and especially bring young adults to this timely and important event.
