WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding ATV and UTV riders to prioritize safety on trails and routes as part of the Think Smart Before You Start campaign. Riders can expect to see increased patrols by DNR conservation wardens and county recreation deputies statewide, focusing on safe riding practices. So far in 2025, Wisconsin has recorded 27 fatal ATV/UTV crashes. According to the DNR, the majority of these incidents involved riders not wearing helmets or seatbelts, with alcohol use and excessive speed also contributing factors. “These campaigns have been an effective tool for us to work with our partners and address risky behaviors that lead to crashes,” said Lt. Jake Holsclaw, Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. “Things like operating while intoxicated (OWI), speed, and careless operation are always a focus for us. At the end of the day, our goal is to prevent fatalities and make our trail and route systems safer for all users.” Officers will be focusing on OWI enforcement, speed violations, and careless driving. They will also ensure compliance with helmet and seatbelt laws. Riders in UTVs must wear seatbelts, and anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet. “This gear takes minimal effort to wear but makes a huge difference in the event of a crash,” Holsclaw emphasized. The DNR encourages all riders to review the Wisconsin ATV/UTV Regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable riding season.
